Age: 17-19. She is roughly the same age as Link, but an exact one is not given.
Gender/Sex: Female/female. While Ruto doesn't have any human sexual attributes, she's extremely feminine in appearance and it's unlikely anyone would mistake her for male.
Appearance: Ruto is primarily a pale blue in colour, though she is mottled to a darker blue or even green on different parts of her body. She stands roughly around 5'8" in height and is about 160 pounds. She's svelte with strong muscles from swimming. She has smooth, fish-like scales, fin-shaped ears, several elegant fins on her arms, legs, and something like a dorsal fin on her back. Instead of hair, she has a blue-green crest with two purple false eyes on either side of it. Her normal eyes are also purple in colour. Her toes are webbed and her feet flat. She doesn't wear clothing except for a bracelet made of scaled metal from which hangs a bauble containing a special 'scale' of her people.
An image of her can be found here.
History: Princess Ruto is first referred to in Ocarina of Time when Link visits the Zora whilst looking for the Spiritual Stone of Water. It appears she's been missing for a while! Link discovers that she's been swallowed by the Zora's guardian deity, Lord Jabu-Jabu, and allows himself to be eaten by the fish in order to rescue her. Ruto tells him she didn't ask for anyone to 'save' her and that she can't leave until she's found her mother's precious gem (which is naturally the Spiritual Stone of Water, or Zora's Sapphire). When Link refuses to give up, she sits down and tells him that he can have the honour of carrying her around until they find her the Sapphire. Ruto is delighted when they do and briefly tells Link that she's fine with being swallowed by Jabu-Jabu, but that something strange seems to be bothering him. Before she can say anymore, she's sucked up into some other part of the fish and Link has to fight a monster. Eventually Link defeats the dungeon boss and meets up with Ruto again. She admits that he was cool and also finds him incredibly good-looking. Flustered that her saviour is handsome as well as cool, she agrees to give him the Zora's Sapphire on the condition that he'll marry her - her mother told her to only give it to her future husband, after all.
Seven years pass. Ganondorf takes over Hyrule. Ruto and her people are frozen under the ice that takes over Zora's Domain. She is saved by a young Sheikah Warrior called 'Sheik' and told that the Water Temple in Lake Hylia needs her immediate attention. Willing to do anything to save her people, Ruto immediately heads there. She meets up with Link again and chastises him for leaving her to wait for so long, but sets her mind to solving the puzzles of the Temple with him. They get separated and meet up after Link destroys the monstrous boss of the Temple. This breaks Ganondorf's evil seal and allows Ruto to awaken as the Sage of Water - someone who will assist the Hero of Time and the Princess of Hyrule in defeating their foe.
Ruto gives Link the Medallion of Water to prove that he has awakened her and adds her power to his, deciding to embrace her role as Sage rather than marry her betrothed. She spends the rest of the game in the Chamber of the Sages praying for Link and Hyrule - though she does ask Link to thank Sheik for her. From there, she uses her magic to assist Link in crossing the chasm to Ganondorf's castle, and while he's in there she helps Link to break a part of the barrier protecting his inner sanctum. When Princess Zelda calls for them at the last moment, the awakened Sages join their power and seal Ganondorf into the Sacred Realm. After this, all of the Sages can be seen watching the celebration of Ganondorf's downfall from a lonely peak on Death Mountain, pleased that they've done their part for Hyrule.
Personality: Ruto initially comes across as a spoiled brat. She's very haughty and highly aware of her status as a Princess. When annoyed, she'll constantly refer to her 'Daddy' - the Zora King. Hell, in Hyrule Warriors one of her defeat soundbites is '"I'll... I'll tell on you to daddy! '. Even when she isn't being huffy, the proper way she'll talk about her 'Father' serves to remind people that she's highly aware of her royalty and his, thank you very much. When she's rescued as a child, she spends most of her time standing beside her father in the throne room and is spoken to by standing on a dias before them.
When speaking to people beneath her station, she'll often huff at, snub, or sharply remind them that they're in the presence of royalty. The most well known example of this is when she insists Link carry her through Lord Jabu-Jabu - 'Then I will give you the honor of carrying me!' - which didn't endear her to many fans. If Link happens to leave Ruto somewhere - for example, to battle a monster, she'll snap at him 'How inconsiderate! How could you leave me behind? If you're a man, act like one! Take responsibility!' It's very selfish of her and she seems to delight in behaving this difficult. In fact, Ruto is so well known for her superior attitude that one of the enchanted gossip stones even says 'They say that Ruto [...] who is known for her selfish nature...' when sharing some secrets about her!
However this is just one facet of the Zora Princess; she's fiercely loyal and protective of her people - 'I want to save them all! I want to save Zora's Domain!' - and considers them the best of the best. She almost goes mama bear on enemies in Hyrule Warriors if they attack her allies, yelling 'Don't you dare lay a hand on my friends!' if they come close. She has the same fierce certainty that she'll be obeyed in this role, but it's considerably more benevolent.
She shows that she has her priorities right when she focuses on ridding the Water Temple of its curse rather than spending time with the man she's engaged to, even going so far as to say 'But now is not the time to talk about love' when she finds herself starting to chastise Link for leaving her. She willingly keeps herself to the Chamber of Sages rather than marry the man she's been in love with for seven years. In Hyrule Warriors, she meets a deadly enemy on the battlefield and talks to him about his honour and ethics until he is convinced to no longer fight them. Ruto also makes sure that her allies take care of themselves - 'Goodness, that was tiring. Everyone, good job! Now let's rest up for the next battle!' She gives praise where praise is due and shows that she's got the makings of a good leader and commander in her snobby little heart.
Even as a child, she had some clear responsibilites that she took very seriously, however. She was in charge of preparing the meals for Lord Jabu-Jabu every day and had been ever since she was a young child. She also clearly loves her father and is happy to sit (or stand) with him in the throne room, and it's shown she can pacify his disgruntlement - for example when Link speaks to King Zora wearing a Zora mask, he thinks he's being mocked. Meanwhile, Ruto thinks it's funny and is clearly pleased, so the King doesn't take it to heart too much.
Finally, before her awakening as a Sage she was happy with her own abilities. As the Sage of Water, she's understandably pleased with them. She'll gleefully engage her enemies with a self-assured 'So, you believe you can beat me? Hah! Hardly!' and revels in her mastery of the battlefield. Even when you get to know her, it's likely her self-confidence might be a little off-putting. Still, she has quite a playful and teasing attitude with her allies, and will happily congratulate them as they do as well as she does - or, well, almost as well, since she's clearly the best.
Abilities: As Sage of Water, Ruto's magic primarily revolves around the manipulation and control of water. When she wants to move fast, she creates her own water stream in the air to swim through. To attack, she summons sharp sprays and splashes of water to augment the damage done by her fins and limbs, and casts stronger spells that involve summoning tidal waves and whirlpools, or trapping her enemies in a bubble of water where she'll swim around them and attack them while they can't breathe. She's also able to place a bubble of water around her enemies' heads, making them take damage over time (presumably because they can't breathe). Finally, she appears able to create small magically connected pools of water that she can leap between during attacks, making her very slippery and hard to keep a track of during these spells.
Inventory: The Zora Scale, which allows Ruto to channel her magical abilities with more finesse. If given to a human (or presumably non-aquatic/amphibian race), it will allow them to dive more deeply than the would be without it, ignoring water pressure.
